The first full trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day dropped worldwide this morning, timed to sunrise over New York City. Sony clearly spent the preceding 24 hours releasing two-second fan clips to build anticipation, which is the kind of marketing strategy that makes you feel like you're being rationed. The full thing is finally here, and it's a lot to unpack.
On the surface, this is a reassurance trailer. Zendaya's MJ is here. Jacob Batalon's Ned is here. There's a shot of Aunt May's gravestone. Jon Bernthal's Punisher is back with his big gun and his swear words, Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner appears to be teaching at a university, and Michael Mando returns as Scorpion, last seen in Homecoming. Director Destin Daniel Cretton has talked publicly about Brand New Day representing a tonal shift for the franchise, but this trailer isn't leading with that. It's leading with familiarity. Which makes sense; the film doesn't open until July 31, and there's time to get weird later.
The most visually striking thread running through the trailer is Peter's physical transformation. He's going through some kind of metamorphosis, black eyes and all, and the trailer leans into the classic Man-Spider storyline from the comics. According to the trailer, Banner suggests that Peter's Spidey DNA is actively mutating, which apparently now includes the ability to produce webs organically from his wrists rather than through mechanical shooters. That's a significant change to how this version of the character has worked across three films, and it raises real questions about where his power ceiling ends up by the time Avengers: Secret Wars rolls around.
The Sadie Sink Question
All of that is interesting. None of it is what people are actually talking about this morning.
Sadie Sink's character remains almost entirely hidden across the trailer's runtime. What little we see is a figure in a long coat, shot from behind, with a strong implication that she's controlling people's minds. The trailer frames her as a threat; one character warns, "We are faced with a danger that we can't control, one we can't even see." There's also a shot of what appears to be the same character chained to a chair in a holding cell, though the camera cuts away before showing her face. Sony is being extremely deliberate about keeping this under wraps.
The mind control angle is doing a lot of work here, and comic book fans know exactly what it's pointing at. The speculation around Sink playing Jean Grey has been building for months, and this trailer does nothing to cool it down. Credit where it's due to IGN for flagging the most compelling piece of evidence: a report that Sink's character is set to return for Avengers: Secret Wars. That detail alone rules out a one-and-done villain role. You don't bring back a throwaway antagonist for the MCU's biggest crossover event. Whoever she's playing matters beyond this film.
A leaked version of the trailer that surfaced back in December apparently included a line of dialogue from Sink's character: "You're a mess, Spider-Man. Don't get in my way. Otherwise, it won't just be your friends who don't remember who Peter Parker is." That framing positions her as a villain, at least initially. Jean Grey's history in the comics involves exactly that kind of arc, powers that make her dangerous before she's in control of them, often exploited by others. The trailer's suggestion that her abilities are being weaponised rather than wielded freely fits that reading perfectly.
Marvel's upcoming X-Men reboot has been described as youth-oriented, and casting Sink, who built her profile through Stranger Things, would be a very intentional choice for that direction. If Brand New Day is where the MCU quietly introduces its first confirmed X-Men member before the full reboot arrives, that's a genuinely clever piece of setup. The kind of thing that rewards people paying close attention.
Brand New Day hits cinemas on July 31. The next trailer will almost certainly show us her face.
